The Hollow Heart

One more tip of the hat

One more backward glance

A look over the shoulder as I walk away

One more moment as I slip off into shadow

And embrace the end of brighter days

There’s something to be said for letting go

To let off the pressure and just fall away

But I know that’s not how you will go out

Bow out before you get hurt

This dance was never meant for you

And there’s no one on the other side

Because no one makes it through this sort of a trial

Without compromising all they hoped to be

One more tip of the hand

As if I believed you the first time

I’m calling your bluff and asking you to leave

Because I can’t take this anymore

I have to cut out the hindrances

And I don’t want you to burn

I look back on these circumstances

The ones we find ourselves locked into

I know all of the reasons.

I have heard all of the reasons

And I have to say, this isn’t you

Watch me grow

from the seed to the tree as tall as can be

See my branches stretching to cover you

To shade you from yourself

Watch me grow

From the vanity we’ve all become

Into something meaningful

No longer lacking grace,

I’m asking you to leave this place

Before we make each other numb

I look back on these circumstances

The ones we find ourselves locked into

I know all of the reasons.

I have heard all of the reasons

And I have to say, this isn’t you
